(NYSE: MAR) is a worldwide operator and franchisor of a range of value
and luxury hotels and related lodging facilities. Marriott
currently has 2,300 accommodation properties in North America alone.
Marriott International was formed in 1993 when Marriott
Corporation split into two companies, Marriott International and Host
Marriott Corporation.
Best Western charges a rate that is based on an initial cost plus

In April of 1995, Marriott
International acquired a 49% interest in
the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company
LLC. Marriott International believed it could increase sales and profit
margins at the Ritz, a troubled
chain with a significant number of properties either losing money or
barely breaking even.

In 2002 Marriott International
began a major restructuring by spinning off Senior Living Services
Communities (which is now part of Sunrise Senior Living) and Marriott
Distribution Services, so that it could focus on hotel ownership and
management. The changes were completed in 2003.
Courtyard by Marriott is a brand of hotels owned by Marriott
International. Courtyard by Marriott is designed for business travelers.
Its rooms feature large desks, couches, free high speed Internet access,
and "big" breakfasts.
Fairfield Inn by Marriott is a lower cost brand of hotels that
are franchised by Marriott International. Spacious guest rooms feature
two queen beds or one king, free cable TV, free local calls, telephone,
voice mail, dataports (free high speed internet access), individual
temperature control, iron and ironing board, and a key-card entrance. A
free, complimentary hot breakfast is offered each morning, featuring a
variety of breakfast items, including a Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich.
Most properties have amenities such as a pool, exercise room, whirpool,
same-day dry cleaning, vending machines, and meeting rooms. As of
December 2005, there are a total of 524 Fairfield Inn hotels worldwide. |
